Between
downtown and Lake Austin are the historic old neighborhoods
which comprise Central West Austin. These include Old Enfield,
Tarrytown, Herman Brown, Pemberton Heights, Brykerwoods, Clarksville,
Balcones and others. Each neighborhood has its own unique
style and character. Some have primarily small two bedroom
cottages, others have stately mansions. The ages of these
homes range between the 1920's to 1970's. New homes are being
built as old homes are torn down.
There is no other area in Austin that can equal the character
and multi-generational charm of Central West Austin. The tree
lined streets with unique, remodeled homes are very appealing.
This is one of the most sought after and expensive areas in
the city. Lots are mostly between 1/7 - 1/3 acre and slightly
sloping, with some hillside areas along Balcones Drive. Lakeside
homes are available. Trees are plentiful and mature. This
area is fully developed with many churches, shopping centers
and restaurants. The overall ambience is of a lovely small
town in the process of constant renewal.
The school district for this area is Austin ISD. Austin High
School, O Henry Middle School and Casis, Brykerwoods and Matthews
elementary schools serve the area.
The 5 to 15 minute drive to downtown or U.T. is an important
part of the appeal of the area. Loop 1 gives quick access
to north and south Austin.
